Speaking on the occasion, Shri Piyush Goyal congratulated CONCOR & Ministry of Shipping for this joint venture. He said, “Railways has introduced many new reforms in the last 4.5 years. This is another first in the series of reforms. For instance, we have stopped producing the old model of coaches and started producing only LHB coaches, to eventually replace all old coaches. We have targeted 100 percent electrification over the vast Indian Railways network. The joint efforts of the Ministry of Road and Railways have led to the inauguration of the Bogibeel bridge by the Hon’ble Prime Minister recently. The Rail University, having now been started, is preparing more than the 100 student for the transport sector. The new indigenous built Train 18, under Make in India initiative, will soon be flagged off on New Delhi Varanasi route. This new service started today by CONCOR will also be very profitable for the freight movement to send goods to different locations in a cost effective manner and will also reduce the load on railways and road. When we strive for world-class logistics costs in India, joint efforts by road, rail and sea is required, only then the pace of development will be accelerated.” He added that CONCOR which started its operation with 7 terminals, today CONCOR has 81 terminals, he added that our goal is that CONCOR should operate from more than 100 terminals by next year. The Minister envisaged CONCOR, a Navratna PSU should develop itself as a “Ratna” for New India.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Nitin Gadkari said, “It’s a red flag day in the history of transportation in India. I’m glad to see this modal shift in the logistics chain. The combination of Railways and Coastal Shipping is a win-win situation for both modes as this will release capacity for railways to carry others goods and facilitate more commodities like steel, cement, and other general cargo to be transported through coastal trade, thereby enhancing the coastal trade basket.
“I urge all CONCOR and other cargo transporters to utilise waterways and coastal shipping to enhance business coefficient as this is a much cheaper mode of transportation”, the minister added. He also outlined his vision of reviving waterways in the country.
Briefly, the arrangement envisages deployment of two dedicated vessels, each capable of carrying minimum of 700 loaded). CONCOR, in addition to first mile and last mile connectivity, will arrange port handling and coastal transportation of loaded/empty containers and bulk/break-bulk cargo between Kandla port to Tuticorin port via Mangalore port & Cochin port. This will provide seamless solution to customers from Origin to Destination. There will be weekly services from Kandla port to Tuticorin port via Mangalore port & Cochin port. As a part of overall strategy of expansion and entry into new areas of business that would complement CONCOR’s position as a Multimodal Logistics service provider, CONCOR has commenced coastal operations from 10th January 2019 onwards.
Later, Shri V.Kalyan Rama, CMD, CONCOR delivered the vote of thanks.

Look forward to better travel experience on Indian Railways trains! Piyush Goyal-led Railway Ministry recently held a high-level review meet to chalk out the road map for projects in the January to March 2019 quarter. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal interacted with general managers of zonal railways and divisional railway managers, outlining the key areas of focus over the next few months for Indian Railways. From better catering, to upgraded trains, public reservation charts and WiFi on railway stations, we take a look at 8 key benefits that passengers can look forward to by March 2019:
1. Airline-like model for reservations: Following the airline model, Piyush Goyal has directed railway officials to make public details of seat/berth reservation. While booking air tickets, passengers are able to view the seating plan on the airplane and choose seats. Indian Railways is looking to experiment a similar system. According to the Railway Ministry release, Goyal said that the reservation chart should be made available in public domain. Goyal also added that officials should explore the option of allowing booking of train tickets for subsequent stops even after the departure of train.
2. Free high-speed WiFi: With over 700 railway stations already covered under Indian Railways ambitious WiFi project, Piyush Goyal wants over 2,000 railway stations to come under the initiative soon. The final plan is to provide the facility of free high-speed WiFi at all railway stations across the Indian Railways network. For this RailTel has tied up with Google and DoT and the project is being implemented successfully. The facility of free WiFi allows users to use public services like internet banking etc, a move that will particularly benefit people staying near remote railway stations.
3. Faster Rajdhani Express trains: Piyush Goyal has asked railway officials to expedite the ongoing trials of Rajdhani Express trains with two engines (one at the front and the other at the rear). The new push-pull mechanism is likely to reduce the overall journey time for passengers and once successfully tested is likely to be used for key Rajdhani Express trains.
4. Single helpline number for all complaints: Indian Railways will come up with a new single helpline number where all non-security related complaints of passengers can be registered. This is likely to be ready by the end of January 2019.
5. No more overcharging for food: To prevent the menace of vendors charging passengers in an ad hoc way, railway officials have been directed that the food menu should be printed on tin plates with rates inclusive of GST. Additionally, in case the vendor fails to give a bill for sale of food items, passengers have been asked not to pay for the meal. To spread awareness on the same, the tin plate printed menu will carry the message, “No tips please, if no bill, your meal is free”. All TTEs and catering staff will also be provided with PoS (Point-of-Sale) machines, to allow for proper bills to be generated.
6. Swanky stations: Piyush Goyal has directed officials that the redevelopment of 68 railway stations should be complete by February 2019. To keep track of the ongoing work, an integrated dashboard has to maintained where officials can upload current photographs of the projects. Indian Railways is looking to equip its stations with modular facilities with better passenger comforts. LED lighting, CCTVs in kitchens, retiring rooms etc will be provided for this purpose.
7. Train upgradation projects: The first phase of two big train upgradation projects – Operation Swarn and Project Utkrisht – will be completed on a priority basis. While Operation Swarn is aimed at upgrading Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express trains, Utkrisht involves revamping Mail/Express trains with ICF design coaches.
8. Cleanliness of toilets: Indian Railways aims to fit trains with aircraft-like bio-vacuum toilets that will help in efficient flushing and reduce the problem of stink. Goyal has said that images of all completed toilets should be uploaded from 4th January, 2019 onwards. Not only that, under the upgradation of toilets on trains and stations, it has been directed that all washrooms should be brightly lit with adequate supply of water and devoid of any broken pots or urinals.

The pace of hiring in India Inc may have slowed over the past couple of years, but 2019 holds out promise for those who want to work in sunrise spaces. HR consultants are counting four lakh new jobs at the very least.

Engineers will be in demand next year with momentum building up in new-age sectors. With much momentum seen in new-age sectors, engineers will be in demand next year. Indeed, the pace of hiring in India Inc may have slowed over the past couple of years with companies shedding flab and automating operations but 2019 holds out promise for those who want to work in sunrise spaces. HR consultants are counting four lakh new jobs at the very least. Moreover, civil and structural engineering capabilities will be needed to build infrastructure and HR consultancy firm Randstad India’s looking at an 8%-plus increase in headcount. Kamal Karanth, co-founder, Xpheno, a specialist staffing firm based out of Bengaluru, believes there could be some exciting opportunities in the IT space as also e-commerce. “We’re expecting a 5-8% increase in hiring in these spaces and also education technology,” Karanth told FE. With electrical vehicles expected to be on the road soon, this space too is looking for talent.
And with investors continuing to back start-ups — close to $10 billion has come in so far in 2018 — more engineering and management graduates are setting up shop on their own. Alka Dhingra, general manager, TeamLease Services, believes start-ups will be big employers looking for talent in spaces such as AI, robotics, blockchain and IoT. Meanwhile, the momentum in IT has begun. Tata Consultancy Services added a net 10,227 employees in the September quarter — the highest in 12 quarters. CEO & MD Rajesh Gopinathan said most were freshers, explaining that the demand for enhanced technology solutions warranted the recruitment.
“It’s not IT services players which are expected to pick up 2.5 lakh people but also non-tech businesses that will be looking for expertise given increasing digitisation,” Dhingra said. A case in point is Dabur India which has added over 200 people this year as it ups its ante on technology-based productivity. Executive director (HR) V Krishnan told FE, e-commerce and digital will be key focus areas for the company in urban markets even as it continues to strengthen the rural workforce. “Dabur is also sharpening its focus on new channels for shopping since consumers are moving to these. So, the key catalyst for jobs will be trade channels like e-commerce and modern trade,” Krishnan observed.
At Hindalco Industries, Samik Basu, chief, HR, will continue to hit campuses for freshers. “We are looking to pick up about 230 engineering graduates or diploma holders this year and around 350 next year,” Basu said. The healthcare sector is estimated to see close to 1-1.5 lakh jobs created, led by the Ayushman Bharat initiative, said Paul Dupuis, MD and CEO, Randstad India.
While half of the recruitment will be done in areas such as electronics and engineering, about a fourth of the jobs will relate to support functions. Hindalco’s Basu said his firm would also be scouting for young HR and finance professionals. R Shankar Raman, director, Larsen and Toubro, had told FE recently that given annual order inflows of $15-20 billion, L&T needed to keep hiring so as to improve the management bandwidth. Sharad Gangal, head HR, Thermax, expects his company to take on more talent given the order book grew at a robust 45% in 2017-18.

Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTE) on board Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express trains will have hand-held, SIM-enabled tablets with a list of reserved passengers from Tuesday. The initiative is a first for trains originating from Mumbai.
“It will help in updating the charts in the passenger reservation system (PRS), thereby benefiting waitlisted people,” said Aarti Parihar, senior divisional commercial manager, Western Railway-Mumbai.
Passenger lists are printed on paper and given to TTEs who, after checking tickets, update the PRS. The list made at the next station reflects the updated system. For instance, in case of the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express, the list is updated in Surat after Mumbai Central, which is the train’s originating station.
“At present, updates are done manually and can be time-consuming. The tablets will be directly synced to the PRS system,” a senior railway officer said.
By updating the lists on a real-time basis, waitlisted passengers will know sooner if they can get a confirmed berth or seat. Senior officials said this will also make allocation more transparent. “TTEs have some amount of discretionary powers to allocate vacant seats to passengers. However, under the new initiative, the unused berths and seats will be allotted automatically,” a senior Railway official said.
TTEs will continue to have the authority to allocate berths to passengers with tickets that have Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) status.
The initiative will also reduce the dependence on paper. The Center for Railway Information Systems has provided WR 52 tablets for the initiative.

The Western Railway (WR) will be adding 22 more services from January 2019. Not only that, it will also add two more trains of 15 cars each. The addition is expected to increase the passenger capacity by 33 per cent.
The WR authorities, in the first phase, will procure two rakes that will enable them to operate 15-car trains running 22 services. This service will be added to the existing 1,365 services, which have been revised since November 1.
These new 15-car trains will be operated on the Virar-Andheri section, which is heavily crowded with over 25 lakh commuters travelling on a daily basis. Only 15 to 20 per cent of the 37 lakh commuters use the Andheri to Churchgate route.
Currently, four 15-car trains run 54 services between Churchgate and Dahanu. The services start from Churchgate, Dadar and Andheri stations.
“In the first phase, we will add 22 services of 15-car that will operate on Andheri-Virar corridor. This will depend on the rolling stock that will be needed,” said Mukul Jain, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), Western Railway.
WR will also start work on extending the platforms between Andheri and Virar stations in order to make them operational for slow trains as well. They will begin work from Virar first for extension of platforms and shifting of signals.
Sources said that even if work at Virar gets completed, they can add two more 15-car rakes that can add 20 additional services on the Andheri-Virar section.
